Digitally Optimizing Corrugated Pipe Extrusion: KC-aktuell Features Hybrid Models by Pro²Future

In issue 3/2026 of KC-aktuell, the magazine of the Austrian Plastics Cluster (Kunststoff-Cluster), the article “Digital zum perfekten Wellrohr” (“Digitally to the Perfect Corrugated Pipe”) presents a joint project by the COMET K1 competence center Pro²Future, the Institute for Polymer Processing and Digital Transformation (IPPD) at Johannes Kepler University (JKU) Linz, and machine manufacturer Unicor. Hybrid models link machine, process and pipe properties to accurately predict quality characteristics such as wall thickness and ring stiffness.

Digitalization in Focus at KC-aktuell

The September issue of KC-aktuell focuses on digitalization and artificial intelligence in the plastics industry. Using corrugated pipe extrusion as an example, the Plastics Cluster shows how research and industry bring data-driven approaches into practice together.

Why Optimize Corrugated Pipes Digitally?

Corrugated pipes are a key product of modern infrastructure, combining high stability with low weight. The greatest potential lies in optimizing machine, process and product together, which saves material and makes production more sustainable.

How Does the Digital Process Chain Work?

A fully automated simulation workflow maps the entire manufacturing process: from forming the parison through calibration and cooling to the mechanical performance of the finished pipe.

What Are Hybrid Models?

Hybrid models combine analytical calculations, numerical simulations and data-driven models. They quickly and accurately predict wall thickness, demolding temperature, ring stiffness and pipe weight. Inline measurement data on geometry and temperature is fed back via transfer learning, improving accuracy under real production conditions.

What Does Inverse Optimization Deliver?

Instead of calculating properties from a given geometry, the desired mechanical properties are specified. The system then automatically determines the matching pipe geometry with maximum performance and minimal material use.
