Successful defense of PhD thesis on skiing skill recognition

We congratulate Behrooz Azadi on the successful defense of his PhD thesis on June 5th, 2025 at JKU Linz, which he completed with the highest distinction: pass with distinction.

His dissertation, titled “Skill Level Recognition of Recreational Alpine Skiers”, was supervised at the Institute of Pervasive Computing by Univ.-Prof. Dr. Alois Ferscha.

The research investigated unobtrusive monitoring and automatic skill recognition of recreational alpine skiers. The thesis established the first end-to-end, smartphone-only system for recreational skiing motion analysis and laid the groundwork for scalable, data-driven tools to provide real-time feedback and promote lifelong skill development.

The examination committee was chaired by Univ.-Prof. Dipl.-Ing. Dr. Josef Küng (JKU, Institute for Application Oriented Knowledge Processing), with members Prof. Daniel Roggen, PhD (University of Sussex, UK), Univ.-Prof. Dr. Gerhard Widmer (JKU, Institute of Computational Perception) and Univ.-Prof. Dr. Alois Ferscha.

Congratulations to Dr. Azadi on this achievement!
